⚠ FCA cryptoasset registration covers anti-money-laundering compliance only. It is not a full licence and says nothing about the safety of client funds — that changes with the new regime in 2027.

About

Since January 2020, crypto businesses operating in the UK must register with the Financial Conduct Authority under the Money Laundering Regulations, in one or both categories: cryptoasset exchange provider and custodian wallet provider. Registration is an AML/CTF check — deliberately narrower than an EU MiCA authorisation or a Dubai VARA licence. That gap closes with the new FSMA regime: from October 2027, crypto activities in the UK become fully authorised and supervised activities, and the application window runs from 30 September 2026 to 28 February 2027.

Is FCA registration the same as a licence?

No — it covers anti-money-laundering compliance only. It doesn't mean the FCA has assessed the firm's financial health, technology or the security of client funds. Full authorisation arrives with the new regime in 2027.

How do I check a company?

Search above — but note firms often register under a different legal name: Coinbase operates through CB Payments Ltd, Kraken through Payward Ltd. If a firm serving UK customers isn't registered, check the FCA's warning list before you send money.

What are the two categories?

Cryptoasset exchange provider — exchanging crypto for money or other crypto, or operating a machine that does. Custodian wallet provider — safeguarding clients' crypto or the keys to it. Many firms hold both.

Is an FCA registration valid in the EU or Dubai?

No — separate regimes, separate applications. See our EU · MiCA and Dubai · VARA registers. Groups like Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Revolut and Crypto.com appear in more than one.

How current is this data?

We re-check the FCA register every day via the FCA's official data interface, so new registrations and cancellations appear as soon as the FCA publishes them.

What UK registration means — and what changes in 2027

The firms below are registered under the Money Laundering Regulations, not licensed. That distinction is the whole point of this page. Registration means the FCA has assessed a firm's anti-money-laundering systems, its beneficial owners and its officers, and found them adequate. It says nothing about the firm's financial soundness, how it safeguards client assets, whether its products are suitable, or whether customers have access to the Financial Ombudsman Service or the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. If a registered firm fails, customers are typically unprotected.

Registration is also hard to obtain. The FCA has approved only a minority of the applications it has received since the regime began in 2020, and has been publicly critical of the quality of submissions. That scarcity is why this register is short relative to the number of firms marketing crypto services to UK consumers — and why appearing on it carries weight, within its narrow scope.

Two activity categories exist. A cryptoasset exchange provider converts between crypto and money, or between different cryptoassets, including operating a crypto ATM. A custodian wallet provider safeguards clients' cryptoassets or the private keys to them. Many firms hold both. Everything else — lending, staking-as-a-service, derivatives, advice — sits outside the MLR regime entirely, and may or may not be regulated under other rules.

The regime is being replaced. Under the Financial Services and Markets Act framework, crypto moves from AML-only registration to full regulated-activity authorisation. Applications open 30 September 2026 and close 28 February 2027; the new regime commences 25 October 2027. Every firm on this list, and every newcomer, must apply — existing registration does not carry over automatically. Firms that do not obtain authorisation cannot continue serving UK clients.

Names rarely match brands. Kraken is registered as Payward Ltd, Coinbase as CB Payments Ltd, Crypto.com as Foris DAX UK Limited, Neteller as Paysafe Financial Services Limited. This page shows both so a search for the brand finds the correct legal entity — and so a firm claiming registration can be checked against the entity that actually holds it.
