EU publishes guidelines for general-purpose AI model providers under AI Act

The EU has published new guidelines clarifying obligations for providers of general-purpose AI models, effective 2 August 2025.

The European Union published guidelines on 20 April 2026 regarding the obligations for providers of general-purpose AI models under the AI Act. These obligations will come into effect on 2 August 2025.

The guidelines specify the scope of obligations laid down in the AI Act, but do not provide a specific article or section number.

The guidelines apply to all providers of general-purpose AI models as identified by the AI Act.

Providers must prepare to comply with these obligations by the effective date of 2 August 2025.

The guidelines are available in all 24 EU official languages, ensuring accessibility for compliance teams.
